Split AC is used more commonly now-a-days. Split Machines are very silent since the compressor is in the outdoor and there is hardly any sound inside. Split machines cool the room slightly better than the window AC. Window AC on the other hand are cheaper in cost than Split AC.
Remove the batteries from the remote if you are not going to use your Air-Condition for a few days (more than 7 days).
You can always check if the remote is in working condition or not by just pressing all the buttons (one at a time) in front of a camera of your phone. If a light glows when you press a button, then that button is working properly. (The light might come after 2 seconds)
If the machine is not running regularly, ensure that you switch it at least for 5 minutes after every 30 days to avoid clogging and choking.
Do not block the outdoor unit of the Split AC with any material, it is good to have an open space around it for the warm air to go away. This reduces the load on the compressor and saves electricity; else it will draw more electricity
Ensure that you service your machines regularly (4 times a year) to avoid choke up of the machine. By servicing regularly you will enjoy the cool air more and also your electricity consumption will reduce thus saving your costs. This will also increase the life of the machine and avoids high maintenance cost during breakdown
If you go for a premium brand the AC can work good for more than 10 years also. Other brands can work good for more than 6 years or so. But regular servicing is important to maintain the AC if one is looking to use if for a longer duration.

Sometime it affects, you should always prefer to install from the vendor who is supplying you the AC or someone under their contract. If you do not do it from the same vendor, he might not give you the warranty for your Air Condition.
